The afternoon I called my mother from the private screening room at Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment was one of the best days of my life. I’d just gotten my job as Vice President of Television and was reviewing every film he’d made to see which properties might make good TV shows. From the time I had graduated from high school, my conservative mother had encouraged me to become a court reporter; it’s a safe, solid career choice, she’d remind me every time I tried something new. With Raiders of the Lost Ark playing in the background, she finally had to concede the truth: I was right and the risks I’d taken to work in the entertainment industry had paid off. I was now doing what I’d always dreamed of.

This book is my way to encourage you to take a risk and follow your dreams. But you don’t have to do it alone. When I began the journey that ultimately took me to that darkened screening room, I didn’t know anyone in show business and didn’t have a clue how to proceed. Along the way, I kept wishing someone would tell me what to do; explain the unwritten rules that everyone else seemed to know. As I was figuring things out, I vowed to help other aspiring hopefuls.

I mentored wonderful, talented people and started to teach classes at universities on career development — how to break into and succeed in the entertainment industry. Over time the material evolved into the Hollywood Game Plan. It’s a concrete, step-by-step plan that offers the tools you need to navigate this highly competitive, rapidly evolving business.

Traditional media is frantically trying to figure out how to make money in this new climate, while digital media giants like Google an Amazon are cutting into the traditional entertainment market.

While they fight it out, you still want to get a job. Despite the downturn in the economy, now is a great time to get a job in entertainment. More opportunity exists today than ever before; different kinds of productions are on the rise and new types of jobs in the digital end of the business are springing up all the time. In spite of all the changes, the entertainment industry always responds to talent and passion.
